2013_04_13_08_36_12_10 - Mon Jul 7 18:42:04 2014

This is the Key West Cemetery. It was established in 1847 following the disastrous hurricane of October 11, 1846. The hurricane destroyed several burial grounds, necessitating establishment of a new city cemetery. In 1847, the City purchased a 100-lot tract in the center of town for $400. This unique and intriguing cemetery lies in the heart of Old Town in a twenty acre park-like setting. Cuban cigar makers, Spanish-American War veterans, soldiers & civilians, millionaires & paupers, whites and blacks, Catholics, Protestants & Jews rest side-by-side, echoing the island city's diverse heritage.

2013_04_13_10_27_28_10 - Tue Jan 20 08:27:05 2015

We took a tour today of the Ernest Hemmingway House and grounds. The Hemingway home was built in 1851 in the Spanish Colonial style, and was constructed of native rock hewn from the grounds. The home was in great disrepair when it the Hemingways took ownership, but both Ernest and Pauline could see beyond the rubble and ruin, and appreciated the grand architecture and stateliness of the home. The massive restoration and remodeling they undertook in the early 1930’s turned the home into the National Historical Landmark that thousands of tourists visit and enjoy today.

2013_04_13_10_27_57_10 - Tue Jan 20 08:27:56 2015

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is home to approximately 40-50 polydactyl (six-toed) cats. Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes. About half of the cats at the museum have the physical polydactyl trait but they all carry the polydactyl gene in their DNA, which means that the ones that have 4 and 5 toes can still mother or father six-toed kittens. Most cats have extra toes on their front feet and sometimes on their back feet as well. Sometimes it looks as if they are wearing mittens because they appear to have a thumb on their paw. Ernest Hemingway was given a white six-toed cat by a ship's captain and some of the cats who live on the museum grounds are descendants of that original cat, named Snow White. Key West is a small island and it is possible that many of the cats on the island are related. The polydactyl cats are not a particular breed. The trait can appear in any breed, Calicos, Tabbies, Tortoise Shell. White, Black, etc.

One of the more stunning and unusual features of the Hemingway Home property is the in-ground swimming pool, an extraordinary luxury for a residential home in 1930s Key West. The final cost of construction in 1938 dollars was $20,000. Even more mind-boggling is the sheer labor of digging, in solid coral, a massive hole 24 feet wide, 60 feet long, 10 feet deep at the south end, and 5 feet deep at the north end. The Hemingway pool—the only one within 100 miles in the 1930s—was truly an architectural feat.

Key West has a lot of off-beat charms, but one of my favorites has always been the chickens. The feral fowl that frequent the streets and alleys of Key West seem like the perfect metaphor for Key West -– historic, colorful, sort of wild, a little noisy and occasionally annoying. You don’t have to work hard to spot Key West chickens — you hear them crowing and see them strutting everywhere. The colorful roosters and the mother hens followed by lines of tiny chicks weave in and out of traffic and through outdoor cafes all over town. Key West residents call them gypsy chickens. There have always been chickens in Key West. When people stopped the laborious process of turning live chickens into Sunday dinner many decades ago, some backyard chickens gained their freedom. Other roosters were released when cock-fighting became illegal. The chicken population grew so large that in 2004, Key West hired a chicken catcher to reduce the number.
