In 1940, she was assigned to the Neutrality Patrol in the Atlantic. In 1941 she performed 31 Convoys in the North Atlantic and sank U-Boat 626, later performing convoys to the Mediterrarean and Africa. In 1944, she was reassigned to the Pacific and served as a command ship in the 7th Fleet. After WWII She later served in Vietnam earning her 2 Presidential Unit Citations. In 1985, Ingram became the oldest Active Duty and most decorated Naval vessel serving the United States. She was decommissioned in 1988 after 52 years of service.

Our dive boat with "Dive Key West". Both of our dives will be in the Western Sambos Eco Reserve. The first dive site is referred to as "Haystacks". The water was not terribly clear and it was pretty surgy. But we did see lots of pretty coral and fish, and the surge made for some really interesting sand formations on the bottom. We each had new 3 mil wet suits, which felt pretty good in the 69 degree water.

Back in the water at our second dive site, also in the Reserve. This site is known as Marker 32. We had 2 foot swells, which makes getting in and out of the water a challenge. This was a shallow 35 foot dive. We did see better fish, including a really cool spotted eel and lots of fan and tube coral.

2013_04_13_08_36_12_10 - Mon Jul 7 18:42:04 2014

This is the Key West Cemetery. It was established in 1847 following the disastrous hurricane of October 11, 1846. The hurricane destroyed several burial grounds, necessitating establishment of a new city cemetery. In 1847, the City purchased a 100-lot tract in the center of town for $400. This unique and intriguing cemetery lies in the heart of Old Town in a twenty acre park-like setting. Cuban cigar makers, Spanish-American War veterans, soldiers & civilians, millionaires & paupers, whites and blacks, Catholics, Protestants & Jews rest side-by-side, echoing the island city's diverse heritage.

2013_04_13_10_27_28_10 - Tue Jan 20 08:27:05 2015

We took a tour today of the Ernest Hemmingway House and grounds. The Hemingway home was built in 1851 in the Spanish Colonial style, and was constructed of native rock hewn from the grounds. The home was in great disrepair when it the Hemingways took ownership, but both Ernest and Pauline could see beyond the rubble and ruin, and appreciated the grand architecture and stateliness of the home. The massive restoration and remodeling they undertook in the early 1930’s turned the home into the National Historical Landmark that thousands of tourists visit and enjoy today.

2013_04_13_10_27_57_10 - Tue Jan 20 08:27:56 2015

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is home to approximately 40-50 polydactyl (six-toed) cats. Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes. About half of the cats at the museum have the physical polydactyl trait but they all carry the polydactyl gene in their DNA, which means that the ones that have 4 and 5 toes can still mother or father six-toed kittens. Most cats have extra toes on their front feet and sometimes on their back feet as well. Sometimes it looks as if they are wearing mittens because they appear to have a thumb on their paw. Ernest Hemingway was given a white six-toed cat by a ship's captain and some of the cats who live on the museum grounds are descendants of that original cat, named Snow White. Key West is a small island and it is possible that many of the cats on the island are related. The polydactyl cats are not a particular breed. The trait can appear in any breed, Calicos, Tabbies, Tortoise Shell. White, Black, etc.

One of the more stunning and unusual features of the Hemingway Home property is the in-ground swimming pool, an extraordinary luxury for a residential home in 1930s Key West. The final cost of construction in 1938 dollars was $20,000. Even more mind-boggling is the sheer labor of digging, in solid coral, a massive hole 24 feet wide, 60 feet long, 10 feet deep at the south end, and 5 feet deep at the north end. The Hemingway pool—the only one within 100 miles in the 1930s—was truly an architectural feat.

Key West has a lot of off-beat charms, but one of my favorites has always been the chickens. The feral fowl that frequent the streets and alleys of Key West seem like the perfect metaphor for Key West -– historic, colorful, sort of wild, a little noisy and occasionally annoying. You don’t have to work hard to spot Key West chickens — you hear them crowing and see them strutting everywhere. The colorful roosters and the mother hens followed by lines of tiny chicks weave in and out of traffic and through outdoor cafes all over town. Key West residents call them gypsy chickens. There have always been chickens in Key West. When people stopped the laborious process of turning live chickens into Sunday dinner many decades ago, some backyard chickens gained their freedom. Other roosters were released when cock-fighting became illegal. The chicken population grew so large that in 2004, Key West hired a chicken catcher to reduce the number.

KEY WEST AQUARIUM. Opening for business during the Great Depression in 1934, the Aquarium was Key West's first tourist attraction. The Aquarium was built between 1932 and 1934, and was a major part of Key West's attempt to stage an economic recovery by advertising their city as "America's Caribbean Island." Many of the following photos are from the Atlantic Shores Exhibit and the Touch Tank.

First named Las Tortugas (The Turtles) in 1513, by Spaniard Ponce de Leon, the reefs soon read "Dry Tortugas" on mariners' charts, to show they offered no fresh water. In 1825 a lighthouse was built on Garden Key to warn sailors of coral shoals. The light that now stands on Loggerhead Key was built in 1857.

Nearly thirty years in the making (1846-1875), Fort Jefferson was never finished nor fully armed. Yet it was a vital link in a chain of coastal forts that stretched from Maine to California. Fort Jefferson, the most sophisticated of these, was a brilliant and undeniable symbol that the United States wanted to be left alone. Though never attacked, the fort fulfilled its intended role. Abandoned by the Army in 1874 the fort was later used as a coaling station for warships.

Large quantities of brick, stone, cement, iron and lumber were shipped here from around the United States. Most of the bricks were made in the Pensacola area, a four-day journey by sailing schooner. But when Florida left the Union in 1861, bricks could no longer be obtained from these brickyards. Instead they had to be shipped from as far away as Main. These dark, red-colored Northern bricks are easily visible along the top of the fort's walls.

Casements, or gunrooms, form the backbone of the fort. In essence, they are the fort. large cannons mounted inside these rooms could fire through special openings known as embrasures. To construct these rooms, carpenters first built heavy wooden arches or frames. Next, masons laid brick and mortar on top of the frames, creating the brick arches that are common throughout the fort.

420 Heavy Guns. To protect the Tortugas anchorage,mm Fort Jefferson featured some of the largest and most advanced weapons of its age. The fort's largest guns, known as 15-inch Rodman smooth bores, weighed 25 tons apiece. With a crew of seven men, they could fire a 432-pound projectile a distance of three miles. But advances in technology eventually made even these guns obsolete. By 1900, most of these aging relics were sold to a Philadelphia scrap dealer and later melted down. Six guns remain on top of the fort's walls, and are in the process of being restored from donations from the South Florida National Parks Trust.
